“If there were a choice- as he suspected there was- a choice between, on the one hand, the heights and the depths and, on the other hand, some sort of safe cautious middle way… he for one, here and now, chose the heights and the depths.” ~Van Auken
To read this is to know I’m always moving somewhere or doing something new. In July 2011 I had been lucky enough to be working for an environmental technology company that produces SCR catalysts helping their New Business China Project (that’s a story in itself, because my background is in education not chemical engineering !). I’m no longer working there because I’m back to teaching but that’s where I was when I started this new attempt at blogging.
I enjoy travelling, theatre, church fellowship, attempting Chinese language lessons with Beijing taxi drivers, gastronomy, community outreach, hiking / cycling excursions and pretty much anything that I haven’t yet tried. I’ve garnered a recent addiction to spin class at the gym and I’m hoping that I can find someone who knows how to teach me more about rock-climbing…. or maybe how to kayak. 🙂
I’m a very passionate person in all areas of my life, which why I enjoy being an educator – because it’s not just what you do, but who you are. (If you’re interested here is my class blog, we’re just starting this adventure: http://smartcookies.postach.io/)
I graduated with my undergraduate degree in Special Education, and started off teaching that along with LA/Pre-Algebra at the middle school level. Then I did a crazy leap off the deep end and I’ve been a first grade teacher since 2007…. honestly, loving every minute along the way. While I was in the middle of all that, by grace, I also finished my M.Ed through Indiana Wesleyan University.
Now? Well I am at an international school in South Korea. A new country, a new language…. Yup, its all pretty new even going into my third year teaching here. I thought it would be a good place to process life as I encounter each day. So, there you have it.
Edited to add: I’ve moved….. (yeah, like you didn’t see that coming?!?!) Now I’m privileged and honoured to begin work as of August 1st, 2014 at Iringa International School in Iringa, Tanzania, East Africa. Karibu to my blog!
