My colleague Bryon lived in Florida and has had several experiences with hurricanes. In the Western Hemisphere, they are called hurricanes and in the Eastern Hemisphere they are called typhoons. Last week, Typhoon Tembin was hurtling itself towards Taiwan and we got the rain (Oh, did we get the rain) coming off that weather system. Then we were forecasted to have this hit us…. 
I was prepared and we ended up getting a half day of school on Monday and no school on Tuesday. It was pretty fun as the rain didnt really start up until just after 6:00pm and everyone in Canons went to Melanie and Jon’s to watch Twister, chat, play games and hang out until past 12:30am. But as I came back down the hallway to my flat (they live on the 3rd floor of the same building as me, and I live on the 2nd floor) the wind started really howling.
My air con unit is in the living room and there isn’t one in the bedroom so since I’ve arrived back in Korea my mattress has been sitting in the living room. I was tired and wanted to lay down after talking to Amy on the phone. The wind kept going and things were beating up against my window. I wasn’t afraid, so much as wished I knew for certain that if the window broke nothing would fly into me. So I tried to sleep. And then when a piece of metal hit the edge of my balcony (and then Bryan and Selina’s car I found out today… but the windows werent broken) I moved myself into the bathroom.
I took my yoga mat and laid it down, then a towel, then a sheet, then my comforter and settled in. There are no windows in my bathroom and at that point we had lost power so I was using my flashlight to set everything up. The PA system had been going off all night (there are PA speakers in every apartment in our complex) and it woke me up this morning as well. It rained all morning and around 1pm it finished being as windy and rainy as it had been.
A bunch of us went out to explore and walk the back path through the orange groves to Dolzip (a coffee shop here). Dolzip was closed so we walked further down to see if Troy and Troy (another coffee shop) was open. Nothing was open so we looped back around towards the Canons and had a chicken noodle soup dinner at Bryon’s apartment. Canons has electricity and power back now, but our other staff living at the KIS Village apartments are still without and the school’s wifi was down last I heard. We’re getting the rain from Tembin that’s going to go back by us due to Bolaven’s centre and so I hope my classroom isn’t too flooded. Lots of damage to the trees and construction all around us as well as our KIS school building …. here’s a picture of our Dean of Boarding’s balcony (He lives on campus)
Pray also for the people in the Chinese fishing boat that died just off the coast of our island earlier today.
Overall, not to bad but not the funnest night in the world….
And that’s a typhoon… Korea style.
